Jackie, UVA, and Believing Survivors

What scares me most about the University of Virginia situation and the anonymous young woman whose story was published in Rolling Stone magazine is that it was done so without her permission. Indeed, she had expressly requested that she be removed from the story, and her request was ignored. Not only was this a violation of journalistic ethics, but also a re-victimization of a traumatized person whose experience and character is now under national scrutiny.

Read here about the impact of trauma on the brain.

We must believe survivors, and respect the courage and challenge of speaking out against violence.
