Cindy’s Journey

The Journey of

Cindy McConnell

“She must find a way to preserve a sense of trust in people who are untrustworthy, safety in a situation that is unsafe, control in a situation that is terrifyingly unpredictable, power in a situation of helplessness… Inevitably the child concludes that her innate badness is the cause. The child seizes upon this explanation early and clings to it tenaciously, for it enables her to preserve a sense of meaning, hope, and power.”

Judith Herman, M.D.

Cindy McConnell lived her entire teenage life and much of her adult life held captive by an emotionally, physically, and sexually abusive relationship. In her 30s, she realized her own power, and she left. Today, she lives a healthy life with a supportive family, dynamic career, and most importantly, freedom.
