In a landmark piece of legislation, California became the first state to take a progressive stand to prevent sexual assault. This marks a shift in the discussion around sexual assault, and the no-nonsense approach that it requires. While simply symbolic in many ways, and not without flaws or continued need for action, this is a positive step in the discussion, without a doubt.

Rather than using the refrain “no means no,” the definition of consent under the bill requires “an affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity.”

Time to do away with the old school attitudes that have historically allowed for and indeed encouraged sexual assault and lack of communication in our sexual interactions.
